CoJ billing system allegedly hacked

City suspects system was tampered with

“We ask for the patience of our residents as we work to address this matter and assure them it is receiving our highest levels of attention.”

This what the Executive Mayor for the City of Johannesburg, councillor Herman Mashaba, said regarding the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) customer statement delivery system failure.

In a statement released yesterday (24 May) he stated that the error relating to the April accounts amounted to approximately 412 000 monthly statements not issued, and a further 97 000 statements issued incorrectly. “I have issued an instruction within the city to engage with law enforcement agencies as well as the Cyber Crimes Unit to investigate the cause of the failure,” he said.

Customers were warned that this situation might lead to them receiving two statements for the current month. “We apologise for any inconvenience or confusion caused by this situation. Double billing is a historical issue in our city and we have plans in place to ensure it is a thing of the past by the end of June,” he said.

He appealed to customers to still pay their accounts, even if they have not received a statement yet. “Customers can make payments based on the historical average billing of their accounts, or they can call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 to enquire how much they owe,” the Mayor said.

Customers can pay their municipal accounts by using any of these options:

• Third-party payments

• At an EasyPay outlet available at Pick ‘n Pay, Checkers and Shoprite

• Debit orders

• Direct deposits at any major bank

• Atms

• Internet and cllphone banking

• South African Post Office

Accounts can also be paid in cash at any of the 50 customer service centres across the CoJ, or for more information, they can visit the city’s website, www.joburg.org.za.
