Give us back our houses!

They sang and danced in front of Florida Police Station

Westlake Road was filled with a large crowd of protesters on Saturday morning (19 May) making their way towards the Florida Police Station.

The illegal land occupants demonstrated their dissatisfaction with being evicted.

The marchers were the illegal occupants of the old Roodepoort Rugby Club (Jerusalem) informal settlement, who had been evicted on 17 May. The purpose of their march was to show their dissatisfaction with the evictions and to get back their houses.

The illegal land occupants demonstrated their dissatisfaction with being evicted.

According to eyewitnesses, the march was quite peaceful and protesters were not carrying any weapons. At the police station they danced and sang some church and struggle songs and the words, “Give us back our houses,” could be heard.

The marchers did not turn violent, and after singing and dancing for a while, they dispersed and everything returned to normal.
