Warming up the community

Welfare SA Roodepoort needs help with soup and blanket project

The Welfare SA office in Roodepoort is appealing to community members to open their hearts and help them with their winter project.

“We have started a soup and blanket initiative and are in need of plastic or polystyrene containers to store the soup.

We also need ingredients to make the soup, and these can include tinned or packet soup, fresh vegetables, frozen vegetable soup mix, lentils, beans, peas, soup mix, or mince – basically anything you can use to make some soup,” said Estelle Odendaal, the manager of the Roodepoort office.

The staff and volunteers will be making the soup at the Roodepoort office, and then hand it out from there. “This initiative will focus mainly on our foster homes and then we will broaden our donations to schools as well as to helping out in the community, where there is a need identified,” she said. Donations of blankets are also welcome, and any size blanket, big or small, can be used.

One of the community’s pre-schools has approached the Welfare office and offered to help with this project. The Discovery Montessori School partnered with their pupils and parents to help with collecting the necessary goods. “We wanted to support this initiative, because we want to work in our community. We teach our children to be grateful for what they have and to give back. We will be collecting non-perishable food, as well as soup and blankets to donate,” said Dineo Phadimenyane, a representative of the school. She added that this will form part of their Mandela Day initiative.

“We are also in need of volunteers and foster parents, so if you feel you can offer your help and time, please send an email to manager@rcw.org.za. I will reply and provide you with all the necessary details, as well as the process you need to follow,” Estelle said.

Should you wish to donate towards this project, or maybe offer your services as a volunteer, you can contact the Welfare SA office in Roodepoort on 011 271 8700. “We would prefer residents to drop off donations at our offices at 45 Du Toit Street, Discovery, but if they cannot manage, please contact us, and we can try to arrange for collection,” Estelle concluded.
