Roodepoort CBD issues addressed

Stakeholder meeting well attended

The stakeholder meeting held on 9 May was well attended by City entities, residents and business owners.

The meeting was called by Ward 84 councillor Gert Niemand to address the many service delivery issues being experienced in the Roodepoort Central Business District (CBD). “The Regional Director for Region C, Mlamleli Belot also attended the meeting and agreed to take responsibility for keeping all stakeholders up to date on progress. Officials from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Johannesburg Water, Pikitup, Johannesburg Roads Agency, Environmental Health, Sports and Recreation as well as Citizen Relations and Urban Management (Crum) also attended,” Gert said.

The discussions on the state of the CBD, facilitated by Gert, were open and frank, and issues that could be addressed immediately were identified. “Some of the concerns raised were road markings, repairing inlet drains, cleaning drains, removing illegally dumped refuse, cutting grass, pruning trees as well as litter picking. All the attendees agreed that these issues could be attended to immediately,” he said.

Some other concerns raised by the stakeholders were classified as medium to long-term problems, which needed more time to address. These concerns include hijacked buildings, crime and urban upgrade. “Everyone present agreed that these types of engagement sessions should be held regularly to monitor the progress on the medium and long-term interventions,” said Gert.

The next stakeholder meeting is scheduled for late June, when a dashboard and plan of action for the discussed problems in the CBD will be compiled and presented.

“I will keep everyone updated with the exact date of the next meeting. I urge all stakeholders as well as residents to attend,” Gert concluded.
