A lunch like no other for senior citizens from the U3A

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Senior citizens in the area are invited by the U3A to join them on their Joburg trip on the red and green buses.

The senior citizens from the University of the Third Age (U3A) West Rand branch hosted their monthly social lunch meeting on 17 May to discuss social challenges and their exciting Joburg trip that was extended to other senior citizens in the area.

The members met at the luxurious Kleine Constantia Guest House where they mingled and dined while touching on the seriousness of the engagement.

U3A committee member Marthie Coetzer gives out name tags before the social lunch engagement.

A committee member and event coordinator, Marthie Coetzer, told Roodepoort Northsider that the whole point of the social gathering was to unite all pensioners from the West Rand with similar interests.

“Our aim is to bring pensioners together to meet people their own age with similar interests and to form new friendships,” she said.

Coetzer briefly shared some background information about the organisation. “The U3A is a non-profit organisation that started at the University of Toulouse, France. And a more informal version spread to more than 30 countries worldwide, and in South Africa, we have more than 25 independent U3A branches with a membership of about 11 000.”

She also shared the benefits of being a member of this organisation. “We have outings to interesting places which take place every second month and sometimes go out to group lunches. On becoming a member of the U3A, you can join special interests groups such as walking, singing, board games, bowls, dancing, movies and music evenings.”

Coetzer also extended an invitation to other enthusiastic senior Joburgers to join them on 21 June as they embark on a tour around the city on the red and green buses.
