Two residential complexes in Greenshanks Avenue were besieged by angry protesters who stormed the gates like a herd of elephants during the night of 18/ 19 May. They broke down the gates and perimeter walls, gaining entrance to the complexes. They then proceeded to break windows and steal television sets and other valuable items. Police and JMPD officers fired warning shots which dispersed the crowds. However, the situation is still tense as there is a standoff between the protesters and complex residents. Concerned resident Carlene said she feared for her safety as the protesters are baying for blood.

“We can see that some of the protesters are carrying petrol bombs, and they have threatened to burn down the entire complex. Although our complex was not badly affected, the breaking down of the perimeter wall has left us exposed and in fear. It is only calm because the police are here protecting us”.
Carlene also claimed that the protesters specifically targeted their residential complexes as they believe the complexes are rightfully theirs.
“They believe that these houses should be theirs and they will not be satisfied until they are burnt to the ground,” she said.
Last night, the protesters began moving from Albertina Sisulu Road to South Road, causing both these roads to be closed off by the JMPD.
Tyres and debris as well as the trucks that were torched and looted on Wednesday night are still blocking parts of Albertina Sisulu Road. The magnitude of the protests also caused Princess High School to be closed for the day.
The protest action started because of the lack of progress in the building and allocation of a number of housing units. Protesters are demanding that Housing MEC, Paul Mashatile, and Joburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, come and address them.
