Sidney and Daphné reach the golden milestone

Couple celebrates 50 years of marriage

“The secret to a lifelong commitment is basically discovering your own recipe, as all relationships are different. You have to care for each other and share everything.”

This is Sidney and Daphné Herbert’s recipe for a successful marriage, and it seems to be working, as they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

The now 75-year-old Sidney was friends with Daphné’s oldest brother and sisters. “I always used my visits to her brother as an excuse to see her and maybe get a date,” Sid said laughingly. But, even though Daphné (now 72) knew him, she liked his car more. “He used to drive a Zodiac, and I often asked him for a lift from Florida to my home in Discovery,” she said with a smile.

They were married in the St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church in Florida on 29 April 1967. Sid started working at the South African Railways, while Daphné stayed at home and looked after their four children. “I always tell the children that they were brought by the stork, but after the fourth one arrived, I shot it,” Sid said, eyes sparkling mischievously.

The couple have four daughters and four granddaughters. It is because of this that Sidney always tells everyone that it was a lifelong dream to have a four-by-four, and now he does.

They celebrated their anniversary in the company of their friends and family, who made this occasion very special to them.
