National Lost Sock Memorial Day

Say goodbye to all single socks on #NationalLostSockMemorialDay

9 May recognises a fun and unique day – National Lost Sock Memorial Day – the perfect day to say goodbye to all single socks who have lost their mates to the great unknown.

Where do all the missing socks go? Is there a washing machine heaven, or maybe a vortex created within the whirl of hot air and tumbling wet clothes within the drier? Maybe there is some sort of Kraken-like creature existing within the washer that eats only the left sock. We don’t know where they go, but we know they always disappear there, and it is an inevitable fact of life that somewhere there exists an ever-growing pile of of missing left socks. So, today is the perfect opportunity for you to mourn your dearly departed foot warmers that were once your closest-knit friends!

The history of missing socks stretches back through the history of knitted footwear, through every culture and nation until it finally disappears at that most glorious moment when the first pair of socks was created. The first Lost Sock Memorial Day would have been held about two days later, when Og failed to find the sock knitted for him by his cavemother-in-law. (Probably eaten by a mammoth.)

Socks, of all our other adornments, have a very unique trait – they are useless without their companions. You would not only look ridiculous wearing one single sock, but your other foot will be cold! So, lost socks are a serious problem!

The lost sock is such a universal issue that in Terry Pratchet’s Discworld series of novels, a creature called the Eater of Socks was created. Comics have also been produced in which the missing sock monster is the star, illustrated as eating, hoarding and even wearing all the socks lost throughout the world.

National Lost Sock Memorial Day is a chance for you to spend some time contemplating the ultimate destination of the whole world’s lost socks.

To celebrate today, you need to sit down and think about what happens to your socks at the end of the day. Don’t be shy, let your imagination run free! Then you need to come up with some ways to prevent this from happening and stop it from ever becoming a problem again. Don’t just sit down and take it when your socks go missing, fight back with clever ideas and technology! However, it is not recommended to fold them together when washing them, you will just end up with two dirty socks!

You can also use the day as an opportunity to let go and move on – clean out all your left behind socks. Make sock puppets or recycle those old socks by reusing them as dust rags. Say your final goodbyes to your lost socks and use #NationalLostSockMemorialDay to post on social media.
