Keep your pets safe

Keep your pets safe by following these tips.

One of the worst things a pet owner can experience is a dog or cat going missing, because you never know if you will see your pet again or if it will be used for sinister activities.

According to the SPCA, dog-fighting is escalating and so are cases of animal theft. Dogs and cats go missing every day, and pet owners are urged to be aware of the fact that all animals are being stolen – large dogs for fighting and small dogs and cats to use for training (bait).

Just imagine if your dog or cat disappears from your yard and ends up in an unfamiliar place, mauled and left for dead. Not a pleasant thought?

Then you should take note of the following tips to keep your pets safe:

• When your pet is not on a leash, ensure you keep a close eye on it – this includes your yard, parks, etcetera.

• Do not leave your dog unattended in a vehicle.

• When going to the store or a public place, do not tie your dog outside and leave it unattended.

• Consider microchipping your pet, for tracking purposes.

• To avoid pets getting out of your yard, do not leave the gates open.

The public is urged to report any cases of dog-fighting to their nearest police station or branch of the SPCA. Remember – if you do not report it, you support it!
