National School Principal’s Day

Appreciate the hard work of the school principal on #NationalSchoolPrincipal’sDay

1 May is National School Principal’s Day and is observed annually to raise awareness about just how important the school principal is to the success of the school.

Eli Broad said, “You can have great teachers, but if you don’t have a god principal, you won’t have a good school”.

It is funny – in a sad sort of way – that in the majority of high-school shows the principal is portrayed as the chief villain. You rarely see a positive and supportive one. This results in everyone seeing the school principal as the enemy of each and every learner. National School Prinicpal’s Day sets out to change that.

A school principal’s work is endless and they are worthy of honour for the work they do. No matter your school’s size, you are going to have principal – sometimes there will even be more than one. But what exactly do these people do?

You may be surprised to learn that they do far more than terrorise learners and administer detentions, suspensions and expulsions. This was what learners and parents believed a principal to be, and the Teacher’s Association decided it was time to create a celebration of these hard-working heads of school staff and raise awareness of everything their job entails.

Principals have a full-day job. Throughout the day they meet with teachers, share concerns about learners, lesson plans or goals they are trying to achieve. The school principal is everyone’s counsellor – from the teacher who just wants to vent, to the parent who wants to see him about their child’s performance. Who do you think your parents yell at when they are unhappy about a teacher?

To celebrate today, put together an event to show principals how much you appreciate them. You could keep it simple by going to their office (not during a class period) and thank them for everything they do and tell them how much you appreciate their efforts to make the school great.
