Family and friend of slain journalist speak out

Some information can not be released to the public yet.

The brother, Thabiso Nare, of slain journalist Godknows Nare, has spoken to the Record to give his version of what happened on the night of 17 April.

According to Thabiso, Godknows was visiting his sister in Hull Street. His vehicle was parked outside the flat. When he decide to leave for home, he came out of the flat and got into his vehicle. As he drove off, the Metro Police, who were monitoring an alleged hijacked vehicle that was parked close by, opened fire and Godknows lost control of his vehicle. “When he got out of the vehicle he had his hands up, according to the eyewitnesses, but the Metro Police shot him regardless,” said Thabiso, “The man they arrested on the scene even told the police he did not know my brother,” said the grieving Thabiso.

The Record asked long-time friend and occasional collaborator, film-maker Khanyisa Crowder, what the last projects Godknows was working on were and if they might be related to his death. She said he had just started working on a project on rhino poaching for a Swiss TV channel, but declined to give any other details. When asked if Godknows had told her recently that he had been threatened or feared for his life, she said she was not at liberty to discuss such information, because of the ongoing investigation into Godknows’ death. Both Khanyiso and Thabiso said they would inform the Record when they were allowed to reveal the information.

Godknows died at about 9.40pm that night. The Metro Police allegedly fired 10 shots, of which four hit him. The Metro Police claimed that Godknows opened fire first but according to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate, which is investigating the incident, they could find no proof that Godknows fired any shots.
