UPDATE: No traffic calming measures for John Vorster Road
RADIOKOP – Joburg Roads Agency clarifies the different road classes.
Joburg Roads Agency explains whether or not John Vorster Road is eligible for traffic-calming measures.
Spokesperson for the agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers said,
“In a balanced road safety system, the implementation of physical traffic-calming measures is limited to Class 4 collector streets and Class 5 local streets within residential areas. Exceptions may be made in respect of Class 5 local streets within commercial areas that carry low volumes of vehicular traffic and are used or crossed by large numbers of pedestrians or cyclists.
“Minor arterials (Class 3), major arterials (Class 2) and principal arterials (Class 1), which have the primary function of mobility at reasonable speeds, the appropriate means to regulate drivers’ speeds is effective law enforcement. Physical traffic-calming measures will not be used to regulate speed on these roads,” she added.
Below are definitions of road classes:
Class 1: Defined as freeways, national or provincial roads.
Their main function is to facilitate regional mobility in an area. Examples are the N1, N3, M1 and M2.
Class 2: Major arterials form part of the primary road network in urban areas.
They are characterised by high traffic volume, limited access and fairly high speeds. Examples are William Nicol Drive, Beyers Naude Drive and Rivonia Road
Class 3: Minor arterials that link primary roads with development nodes which are characterized by high traffic volumes, limited access, moderate speed and mobility. They form part of public transport routes for buses and taxis.
Class 4: Collector street commercial or residential roads link residential roads with higher order mobility streets
Class 5: Local commercial or local residential streets with the main purpose of being an access road.
Therefore, traffic-calming measures would not be implemented on John Vorster Road, which is classified under Class 3.
