Traffic control signals to be erected at the corner of Albert and Haak-en-Steek streets

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Joburg Road Agency can not confirm when traffic signals will be installed.

Residents of Albert and Haak-en-Steek streets can breathe a slight sigh of relief after Joburg Road Agency has agreed to erect traffic control signals at this intersection.

Chairman of the trustees and residents’ committee for a complex on the corner of these streets, Michael Steyn, was behind a petition to have a four-way stop at this intersection, as the speed at which motorists travel on the road does not allow for residents to leave their homes or complex safely.

He added that residents of the complex have tried logging the problem on various platforms, including the road agency’s app, but to no avail.

Steyn said there have been many close calls and near accidents, enough to have residents sign the petition for action. Steyn even brought the issue up at the Ward 89 public meeting.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Joburg Roads Agency confirmed the agency’s traffic engineers would undertake the required traffic counts to determine whether the intersection warrants the installation of a four-way stop or alternatively a traffic signal.

In a response to the traffic count, Peters-Scheepers can report that the traffic engineers have completed the study and have determined that a signalised intersection is warranted, as the location of the intersection is not conducive to implementing a three-way stop (three-way as Haak en Steek Street technically ends when it meets Albert Street, and the paved road becomes Cornish Avenue).

“The installation of the traffic signals at the intersection is based on available budget and this intersection has been placed on a priority list. Unfortunately, we cannot give implementation time frames at this stage however, the process should take a few months,” Peters-Scheepers added.
