Popular café targeted by armed robbers

No one was injured during the incident.

The popular Lisbon Café on the corner of Gregor Street and Generaal Pienaar Avenue fell prey to an armed robbery early yesterday evening (23 April).

According to a petrol attendant who works at a nearby garage, he went to the café at about 7pm. He alleged that one of the armed men was in the store buying takeaways. He then left but after about 10 minutes he returned with three armed accomplices. At gunpoint they ordered the customers to lie on the floor and then demanded money and the employees’ cellphones. After taking their loot they fled on foot in the direction of the informal settlement. It is believed that their getaway vehicle was parked further down Gregor Street.

According to Manuel dos Santos, one of the three owners who was in the store at the time of the robbery, a substantial amount of cash was taken from the cash register but he expressed his relieve that no one was injured.

None of the customers were robbed.
