National Talk Like Shakespeare Day

Use thee, thou and ye on #NationalTalkLikeShakespeareDay

23 April is National Talk Like Shakespeare Day and is the perfect opportunity for you to speak like the man himself.

William Shakespeare was born on 23 April 1564, and was the author of some of the world’s most famous plays and poems. We can speak like Shakespeare by using words like thee, thou and ye instead of you and they and don’t forget that rhyming couplets and creative insults were some of his favourites.

Many of the phrases we use today are thanks to Shakespeare. Some of these phrases include:

• Waiting with bated breath

• Going on a wild goose chase

• Being the laughing stock

• Fight fire with fire

• The naked truth

• Snatched from the jaws of death

• Being in a pickle

• Making someone’s hair stand on end

• Setting your teeth on edge

• What’s done is done

National Talk Like Shakespeare Day was first launched in 2009 by the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. The day was inspired by another day devoted to talking in character – International Talk Like A Pirate Day (19 September).

In 2011, the theatre’s efforts were given recognition when the Illinois governor, Pat Quinn, proclaimed 23 April as National Talk Like Shakespeare Day. For more information on this day visit https://www.shakespeare400chicago.com/talklikeshakespeare.html
