Joburg Metro Police make more than 800 Easter arrests
More operations to follow in coming weeks.
The Joburg Metro Police Departement (JMPD) arrested 815 law-breakers during the Easter weekend.
According to the JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, a total of 197 culprits, of which seven were females, were arrested for drunken driving; 26 in Roodepoort, 17 in Midrand, 22 in Randburg, 34 in Soweto, 33 in Eastgate, 40 in the Joburg CBD, three in Rosettenville and 22 in Lenasia.

During tactical and tracing operations for unpaid fines, 203 persons were arrested in Joburg, 184 in Sandton, 199 in Soweto and 32 on freeways, which brings the arrests to 815 in total.
Speedsters weren’t spared either. During a separate high speed operation on Saturday, 15 April, at the N1 Maraisburg on-ramp, JMPD officers arrested 22 drivers for driving at more than 161 km/h in a 120km/h zone. The fastest vehicle trapped was a Suzuki motor cycle travelling at 222km/h. All of these drivers were detained at Roodepoort Police Station.
“Motorists are reminded not to drink and drive and not to drive above the speed limit, as many similar operations will be held in the coming weeks, ” said Minnaar.
The Department of Transport also released a statement regarding traffic volumes during the weekend. “The number of cars going through the country’s national roads started to spike after midnight on 12 April, and continued throughout the day until the evening. The N1 recorded the most vehicles (155 900) passing through its tollgates, making for an average of 6 495 vehicles per hour. The N4 carried 100 196 vehicles, an average of 4 174 vehicles per hour. The N3 had 86 776 vehicles (an average of 3 615 per hour) travelling on it. The N2 recorded 51 311 vehicles, an average of 2 137 per hour. The N12 was the least busy road, with a mere 29 618 vehicles making their way along the route – an average of 1 234 vehicles per hour.

However, in the period starting from just after midnight on 13 April 2017 until noon of the same day, traffic decreased, with the number of vehicles that passed through the N1 tollgates reaching 56 235 (an average of 4 686 vehicles per hour). This was followed by the N3 which carried 50 052 vehicles, averaging 4 171 vehicles per hour. A total of 39 403 vehicles drove along the N4, an average of 3 283 vehicles per hour, and the N2 recorded 28 701 vehicles, reaching an average of 2 391 vehicles per hour.
