Florin Road circle a work in progress

WILGEHEUWEL – Ward 97 councillor Leah Knott explains the developments on Florin Road.

The traffic circle which joins Florin Road and Bellini Crescent has been a long-standing concern for motorists.

Flooding was an issue at the circle because of poor drainage. Additionally, there was a water leak on the road, which Joburg Water investigated by taking samples to test for groundwater before they started digging as it was possibly not a leaking pipe.

Johannesburg Roads Agency did an inspection of the circle and why it was flooding and sent City Parks a request to remove the cut off reeds from the roadside which prevented the drainage of water off the road.

Since the road is next to a wetland, Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, said the City of Johannesburg in Region C had released the Open Space Plan for the Honeydew/ Ruimsig subversion which outlined amongst other things how rapid and sometimes inappropriate development and land use has allowed for the rerouting and conversion of the wetland in this area, as well as the negative impact on the area’s ecological value.

“They are looking at a programme to manage sensitive areas and ways to rehabilitate natural areas,” she added.

Knott then headed up the following actions starting with the wetland clean-up and rehabilitation by City Parks: the diversion of groundwater, clean out of kerb inlet and repair of the road at the circle by Joburg Road Agency. She was able to confirm the potholes in the road have been repaired and the groundwater was diverted.

Anne Marie Dedekind stands on the corner of Florin Road and Bellini Crescent.

Local resident, Anne Marie Dedekind, said she is glad the road has been repaired as it got to a point where there were more potholes than road. She eventually avoided the road altogether. Although some of the issues are resolved, the potholes are reappearing with the rain.
