Awards abound at Dios Los Ninos School for young reading stars

WILGEHEUWEL – Schoolchildren ended the term with a handful of awards for maths and reading.

Dios Los Ninos (DLN) Private School finished the school term with a flourish of awards, including those for the school’s reading challenge.

“At DLN, we believe in creating a love for reading. Reading is one of the most important tools we can all have in life. We spend a lot of time during school hours reading as well as on special computer reading programme and reading periods,” said principal of the school, Leonie de Kock.

The school has a variety of readers as well as their own in-house readers, while they also visit the library for books.

“We encourage learners to read as much as possible and whatever they find interesting. We also have a ‘reading tree’ at school, where each time a learner reads a book it gets added to their name. At the end of each term we determine the winners,” De Kock explained.

Senior phase winner, Jason Nyasvimbo in Grade 6, won the challenge as he read 14 books and Musa Msomi in Grade 2 took first place for the junior phase with 24 books.

Schoolchildren in grades 4 to 9 also received certificates for their achievements with IXL (online maths programme) which they started in January.

“The idea was to create opportunities for learners to do more maths, practice the principles of maths and in the process get awarded for it. The programme sends us certificates every time that a learner achieves a milestone, for example completing one, two and five hours of math practice; completing 100, 200 or 500 maths questions or completing a level.

“Each time the learner gets a certificate emailed to them. This has created an environment of positive efforts towards maths,” De Kock added.
