8 tips for the best Easter egg hunt

Keep them busy with this Easter egg hunt

The Easter weekend is upon us, which means it is time to stock up on chocolate and start decorating eggs to hide before the big hunt can start.

An Easter egg hunt can be something to look forward to, especially if you think about playing with and eating chocolate, but a poorly planned one can very quickly end in disappointment for even the most enthusiastic kids.

Here are eight ideas to have a fun hunt and keep the whole family entertained:

1. Avoid fights between family members by personalising the hunt. Assign different people to find different items, for instance Joe searches for polka dot eggs and Jane seeks out the striped ones right by his side.

Tip: Use stickers, colours or designs to differentiate between the treats.

2. An Easter egg hunt does not only have to consist of searching for chocolate eggs – throw in some prizes to spice it up! Fill the playing field with items such as hair ties, bracelets, toys and even gift cards for the older kids.

Tip: Keep track of all the goodies you put out there and where you’ve hidden them to make clean up a breeze.

3. Guide the hunters with adorable signs leading them in the direction of the loot.

Tip: Make colourful signs out of cardboard so they don’t blend in too much with a busy living-room or backyard.

4. Following a list is easy for kids that know how to read, but it is near impossible for those who can’t. Help the little ones out by making maps that show them where they will find their Easter loot. The bonus is that you’ll be teaching them to read a map too!

Tip: Up the ante by chopping up the map and turning it into a puzzle. Once the puzzle is solved, they’ll be on their way to finding all the delicious treats.

5. Use unusual hiding spots – if you always hide the eggs under the vase in the kitchen, your kids will come to expect it. Shake things up by putting the eggs in places that require a little extra work.

Tip: The hunters will never expect the Easter bunny to hide an egg in someone’s hair!

6. Sure, you could put on your Sunday best, but it will be way more fun to create a themed hunt. The white rabbit can double as the Easter bunny in an Alice in Wonderland themed hunt.

Tip: Supply the little hunters with some bunny ears and bushy tails.

7. Place letters on each egg so they spell out a word or phrase. Once all the eggs are collected, get the hunters to work together to figure out what the word or phrase is.

Tip: Have a plan on how to divide the chocolate after the puzzle is solved, otherwise you could end up with a lot of tears.

8. While most hunts start with a child and an empty basket, try shaking things up by filling a basket with decadent desserts and use the eggs as a lure to the main event.

Tip: If you’ve gone overboard on chocolate, fill the basket with other Easter essentials like spring flowers.
