How to make your own Easter eggs

Have some fun and make your own Easter eggs

Sure, you can buy Easter eggs, but making your own will afford you with the opportunity to spend some quality time together – and have fun!

To make your own Easter eggs is not as hard as you think it might be, all you need is an Easter egg mould.

You will need:

•About 500 grams of chocolate, melted

• Easter egg moulds

• Cotton wool

• Palette knife

• White cotton gloves (to avoid getting finger marks on the eggs)

• Baking sheet

• Ribbon and bows (optional)

• Small disposable piping bags.

Step 1 — Ensure all the moulds are clean and dry. To ensure they are dust and grease free, polish the insides with cotton wool – the shinier the mould, the shinier the eggs will be.

Step 2 — For unpatterned eggs, spoon several spoonfuls of melted chocolate into a mould and keep rotating it – ensure the chocolate is running right up to the top edge.

Step 3 — Tip out any excess chocolate and use a palette knife to draw along the top edge of the mould to ensure a straight edge. Leave chocolate to set, but if it looks thin or patchy, add another layer of chocolate. Place the mould in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes (until chocolate is very firm). Remove from the fridge and turn the egg out.

Step 4 — To stick the two halves together, heat a baking sheet in a hot oven for a few minutes. Wearing gloves, take two matching egg halves, and hold them briefly on the hot tray to melt the edges and press them together. Hold them until stuck and leave to set completely. If you want, decorate with ribbons and bows.

Step 5 — To make a zig-zag pattern on the egg, use a piping bag filled with a contrasting chocolate colour. Pipe lines across the mould in several directions, and leave to set. Coat the mould with the other colour of chocolate as in steps 2 and 3.

Step 6 — For a set-in swirly design, fill a piping bag with one colour of chocolate and pipe continuous ‘e’s in the mould. Leave to set and then coat with contrasting colour chocolate as in Steps 2 and 3.

Step 7 — You can cover your eggs with fun designs and personalise them for each of the children. Enjoy a happy Easter!
