National Encourage A Young Writer Day

Support a young writer on #NationalEncourageAYoungWriterDay

10 April is observed annually as National Encourage A Young Writer Day.

Do you know a young person who has a vivid imagination, likes to tell stories and reads a lot of books? Those are all signs of a great young writer and today is the perfect opportunity for you to talk to them about their ideas and dreams and encourage them to pursue their goals and develop their writing skills.

To celebrate today, follow some of these tips on how to support young writers:

• Give them journals as this provides an opportunity and place for daily writing. This could be anything from short poems to inspired essays as it affords the aspirant writers the chance to feel free to stretch their wings and write without being judged.

• Offer writing prompts, as these random bits of inspiration can often come from the most unlikely sources with unexpected results. Prompts are available all over the internet as well as in books and in applications (apps).

• Encourage them to read, because the more they read, the more their experience with writers and writing will expand.

• Suggest that they try multiple writing styles and voices. Changing perspective will keep their writing fresh and allow them the opportunity to find their personal style.

• Create a young writer’s group – this is a good way for them to see their story from the reader’s point of view and to receive feedback from their peers.

Give a young writer some encouragement today and use #NationalEncourageAYoungWriterDay to post on social media.
