National Beer Day

Celebrate with a pint on #NationalBeerDay

7 April is National Beer Day. It encourages you to celebrate with a pint of pale ale, lager, stout or wheat beer.

Beer is one of the world’s oldest prepared beverages and dates back to 9500 BC when cereal was first farmed. It is recorded in the history of ancient Iraq and Egypt and is the world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverage. It is the third most popular drink – following water and tea.

President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending prohibition on 7 April 1933 when he signed the Cullen-Harrison Act, a law allowing people to brew and sell beer in the United States. But, this was only allowed if the alcohol by volume (ABV) remained below four per cent. Beer drinkers celebrated and were happy to be able to purchase beer again – after 13 years.

National Beer Day was created by Justin Smith, a Virginia Craft Beer Examiner and his friend, Mike Connolly, from Liverpool, England. 7 April was chosen because it commemorates the day on which the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law. Smith and Connolly created a National Beer Day Facebook page in 2009 where they invited friends to join and spread the word to as many places as possible that 7 April is National Beer Day.

To celebrate today is very simple – just grab a beer and spend some time with friends. Always remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
