Official statement: Will you be safe tomorrow?

Social media abuzz with fear-mongering

Tomorrow (7 April) South Africans will mobilise en masse to demand that President Jacob Zuma either steps down or be removed from office. This will be in the form of peaceful protests and marches across the country.

But many are concerned about their own safety, regardless of whether they partake or just go about their usual business. Social media platforms have been flooded with warnings that ordinary citizens will not be safe. They call on people to stay home and keep their children who are in out of school. One post, claiming to be from the police, stated that “the police can not guarantee people’s safety”.

The Record asked Captain Lydia Dikolomelo of Florida Police Station if residents should heed these warnings. “They definitely are fake. People should go about their business as usual. They must go to work and send their children who are in Daycare or Creche to school. The police are on high alert and we will protect all citizens,” she said.

Nevertheless, the Record encourages residents to be vigilant and careful, especially where protesters gather and at the destinations of the marches.
