National Read A Road Map Day

Take some time away from your GPS on #NationalReadARoadMapDay

5 April is National Read A Road Map Day, which is celebrated annually.

This day reminds us to take some time and sharpen our map-reading skills. Pay attention to your surroundings, and, if you do not know North from East, today is the perfect day to learn.

The earliest road map – the Britannia Atlas – was drawn in 1675 by cartographer John Ogilby. But, fast forward a few centuries and you will be amazed at how things have changed. With satellites, GPS and voice commands ruling our journey, it is a miracle that we even know how to get anywhere!

To celebrate today, put away the electronic map devices and unfold a traditional map. Familiarise yourself with it and take a little road trip – if you feel adventurous enough – invite your friends along for the ride. If you are good at reading a map, why not teach someone else the skill?

Use #NationalReadARoadMapDay to post on social media.
