Libraries launch Easter holiday programme

Providing a safe environment for children to learn and play

The Easter school holidays have just started and many parents are wondering what they can do to keep their children safe and off the street.

The City of Johannesburg has the answer – it has launched its holiday programmes throughout the city’s 87 libraries.

The holiday programmes – specially designed for children between the ages of three and 15 – promise to be a fun learning experience, while providing a safe environment to learn and play during the Easter break.

The activities commenced on 1 April and will continue until 13 April at the various libraries in the city’s seven regions. Activities include story hour, puppet shows, face painting and educational programmes on how children can stay safe at home.

The Davidsonville, Florida, Wilro Park and Witpoortjie libraries are also part of this initiative and are offering the following activities:

• Davidsonville library will have story hour and face painting on 5 April from 10am to 12noon, and on 12 April they will be making an Easter bunny from paper plates between 10am and 12noon.

• Florida library will have an educational session on staying safe at home on 5 April from 10am to 12noon. On 6 April from 10am to 12 noon children are invited to use the computer to do maths and work on the E–Learning programme.

• Wilro Park library will have a story hour and Easter egg hunt on 12 April from 10am to 11am.

• Witpoortjie library will have a story hour, Easter egg hunt and Easter chicks on 12 April from 10am to 11am.

According to the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, children will be less exposed to criminality if they participate in these programmes. “Not only are these programmes removing children from the streets, they are also educating them, and enhancing their reading skills, making the children better readers,” she said.

Grade 12 learners are also urged to visit their local libraries to take advantage of the various library facilities offered as part of the Matriculants’ Support Programme.

Students can make use of the WiFi and eWorld stations for online lessons, tutorials, past question papers and memorandums, as well as online eLearning courses. Conducive studying and learning spaces as well as career guidance programmes are also available at most of the libraries.
