Sad ending for Witpoortjie puppy

Infected wound caused suffering

The story of the puppy that was rescued from a life on the street had no happily ever after. Allegedly it had been living on a sidewalk for approximately two weeks.

According to some residents its owner fell very sick and was hospitalised. When he subsequently sold the house, he phoned the SPCA to take the three dogs.

However, the SPCA only took two dogs as the third one kept jumping over the wall and running away. The new owners of the house could not keep the puppy on their property, because they already have three pit bulls that fought with the puppy and bit it.

The neighbours put down bowls with food and water, and supplied a wooden kennel to protect the puppy from the elements while they tried to rescue it.

After three days of patience, coaxing and trying to win its trust, senior inspector Eric Taljaard from the Roodepoort SPCA rescued the puppy and took it to the SPCA’s veterinary hospital to have a wound on its right inner leg treated.

According to Taljaard, the wound was already showing signs of infection. “The vet admitted the puppy to hospital and treated him. Unfortunately the infection spread to the puppy’s bone marrow which caused him a lot of pain. The vet decided that it would be more humane to rather put him to sleep and end his suffering,” a sad Taljaard said.
