A platform for young people to showcase their talent

ZANDSPRUIT – The informal settlement is often associated with crime elements and service delivery protests.

Katlego Mau (21) aspires to be one of the first young people who will bring about change and make a difference through unleashing the potential talent hidden in Zandspruit Informal Settlement.

This singer and producer, known as KayGee, is the founder and managing director of a fully-fledged and registered entertainment management company, XI GanG Media.

This movement, as he calls it, primarily focuses on the musical and modelling talent hidden within the settlement and surrounding areas.

He told Randburg Sun that he was fed up and at times, infuriated, when young people looked for opportunities without success.

“Doors are being shut all the time. So I started a platform where young people can come together as one collective team and create their own opportunities,” he said.

Mau said the settlement is commonly known for service delivery protests and crime incidents and there is no one who is prepared to narrate a positive story. “There is a positive story in our community.

“Our movement has artists, models and even our own production team based here. We shoot our own music videos and will soon be working on a documentary for Zandspruit, documenting the negatives as well as the positives in our community.”

He completed his Grade 12 at the King’s School Robin Hills in 2013 where he was studying through a scholarship. He has since been studying towards a BComm degree in digital marketing at Rosebank College.

Katlego Mau is adamant that the perception of Zandspruit can change for the better.

Mau has lived with his parents in the area since he was born.

His idea formed soon after he completed Grade 12, before he was registered at the college.

“I thought about starting a platform which will make a difference and [allow] young people to unleash their talent. So far, we have our own models and local musicians.”

He said some of them come from Cosmo City, Diepsloot and as far as Vosloorus.

“Our main challenge now is the venue. We don’t have an area like a community hall where we can practise and perform.”

He explained that financial constraints also stood in their way as they battle to keep their production going while promoting one another.
