National Flatmate Day

Thank your flatmate on #NationalFlatmateDay

24 March is National Flatmate Day and is the perfect opportunity to appreciate your awesome flatmate.

You know that you owe your flatmate a lot for the times your dog was taken care off when your shift ran late, you stood side-by-side with a can of bug spray when your ex showed up for the umpteenth time and when you could make a loan to pay your cellphone bill.

Your flatmate has had your back through thick and thin, good times and bad, and today is the day to say thank you.

If you are not sure exactly how to thank your flatmate, here are a few ideas:

– Compliment your flatmate out of the blue, but be sincere about it. Do this a few times a week, otherwise your communication will only be about problems and issues.

– If you are cooking a meal for yourself, why not double the recipe and invite your flatmate for a feast? Food is often a flashpoint but it can be turned into a positive instead.

– Be reliable. Pay the bills (especially the rent) on time, every time. If you say you are going to clean, make sure you do it. Don’t leave your flatmate guessing.

– Be resource conscientious to help lower bills. Turn off the lights, switch off the air conditioner or heater when you leave the apartment, and conserve water.

– Don’t fret about cents, round your portion of the utilities up to the nearest rand and don’t make a big deal about it. Buy a nice coffee machine, microwave, television or upgrade something you share. You’re going to take it when you leave, so spread some joy while you’re together.

– It’s always nice to have some private time at home, so tell your flatmate in advance when you will be away for a few hours or the weekend. That way, he/ she will be able to make some personal plans.
