JMPD launches traffic hotline – officially

24 hour hotline launched by MMC and Mayor

From 23 March residents are able to report all traffic-related incidents to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) – 24 hours a day.

At some stage everyone who uses the roads has experienced the frustrations of numerous obstacles, including traffic lights not working, congestion, potholes as well as countless drivers not adhering to basic traffic rules, and wished for a solution to these issues.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has launched a new intervention to try and address these issues and bring about the changes residents demanded.

The Executive Mayor of CoJ, councillor Herman Mashaba and the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety councillor Michael Sun corroborated with the JMPD and launched a 24-hour traffic hotline in an attempt to assist motorists.

The hotline number.

“The hotline is a way for motorists to have their traffic-related complaints swiftly attended to by dedicated operators supported by a specialised and highly responsive task team of 640 JMPD officers. This hotline and task force will seek to address the city’s pressing traffic congestion challenges and change the way we move around the city,” Mashaba said.

An additional 1 500 JMPD officers will also be recruited to be utilised in the ongoing battle with traffic congestion. Throughout the city 304 high traffic volume points have been identified that will be manned by JMPD officers between 6am to 9am and again from 4pm to 6pm. “This is a further step to alleviate traffic congestion during peak times,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba urged motorists to utilise the hotline, but only for traffic-related issues. “To use it for any other means would defeat its purpose,” he said.

To report any issues pertaining to traffic lights‚ cable theft‚ flooding‚ road construction‚ vandalism‚ accidents‚ broken-down vehicles, areas where traffic is gridlocked or traffic violations, motorists should call the hotline on 080 872 3342.
