UPDATE: Classes resume at Canterbury Prep

HONEYDEW RIDGE – Teaching and learning resumed on 22 March at Canterbury Preparatory School after an unplanned shutdown.

It’s business as usual at Canterbury Preparatory School after their academic programme was disrupted by an eviction protest in Honeydew Ridge on 15 March.

Informal dwellers from a plot close to the school took to the streets and barricaded the road leading to the school following their eviction by the Red Ants on 14 March.

Although police and private security managed to control the situation, after two days, the school’s director, Kyle Deerans called for a staff meeting and decided to extend the shutdown to make sure that the area was hostile-free.

“After the [staff meeting] we decided that because it’s a school holiday on Monday and a public holiday on Tuesday, that we resume the following Wednesday and take this Friday [17 March] off,” Deerans said.

Teaching and learning resumed a day after the Human Rights Day public holiday on 22 March.

“Everything is back to normal,” Deerans confirmed, adding that the time lost did not require a catch-up programme.

“It was just a few days, we have not lost out on any work but we will be resetting some tests and exams.”
