Roodepoort families need your help

Fire destroys homes in informal settlement

The afternoon of 20 March was one of fear, panic and devastation for 15 families living at the Roodepoort Rugby Club informal settlement.

A fire broke out in the area just after 1pm and caused a lot of devastation. Many families have lost everything they possessed. “The affected families have lost their houses, clothing, blankets and food, and need assistance,” said Caleb Finn, the councillor for Ward 70.

According to Caleb, the City of Johannesburg’s Department for Social Development has already been able to assist the affected members. “The Department has provided social relief in the form of food and blankets, which will be delivered to the residents soon,” Caleb said.

An urgent appeal is being made to the community to please assist the residents with gum poles and zinc sheets to enable them to rebuild their homes. “If anyone is able to assist with these items, or any other form of assistance, please contact me on 082 040 6374 or caleb@ward70.org.za,” Caleb concluded.
