Community forums beautify the neighbourhood

STRUBEN'S VALLEY – Lifco and MyNeighbour embark on separate clean-up initiatives in the same neighbourhood.

Working towards a common goal, recently two rivalry community forums, the Little Falls Struben’s Valley Community Forum (Lifco) and MyNeighbour embarked on separate clean-up campaigns in parts of their precinct.

These clean-ups were unrelated, however, they brought a positive impact to the community following perceived squabbles between the two forums.

Lifco joined forces with local businesses and the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo department to conduct a major clean-up in the upper Struben’s Valley, north of Hendrik Portgieter Road.

The project provided jobs to casual workers on the side of the road under Lifco’s Man at Work programme, an initiative to eradicate poverty and unemployment.

Lifco employs casual workers to mow grass.

MyNeighbour also gathered all its members and volunteers after raising funds to cut the greenbelt in Struben’s Valley.

One of MyNeighbour’s dedicated members, Allen Hobson who has been in the forefront of beautifying the Struben’s Valley area, in an interview with Roodepoort Northsider, said “I have spent in excess of R70 000 of my personal money over the last two years on equipment, maintenance and labour [on grass cutting].”

MyNeighbour member Allen Hobson (right) mows grass with his son.

Hobson’s drive to keep his neighbourhood maintained follows the persistence of criminal activities occurring in the area such as attempted rape and robbery incidents.

“I enjoy assisting people and the neighbourhood [although] they might not realise how [grass cutting] helps them, based on some comments and impolite hooting from [motorists] from time to time. This helps keeps vagrants further away from neighbourhood entrances,” Hobson explained.
