Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the custodian of the city’s parks, street trees, conservation areas and cemeteries, is appealing to residents to be patient as they are working very hard to resolve the seasonal backlogs.

The spokesperson for JCPZ, Jenny Moodley, said they are appealing to residents to maintain the sidewalks adjacent to their homes during this time. “This will go a long way towards alleviating some of the pressures of timeous delivery and will allow us to focus on parks, cemeteries and street trees, which require more specialised maintenance services”.

She added that they would like to commend residents who are going the extra mile and maintaining the verges adjacent to their homes. “Only as a collective will we be able to work effectively and efficiently to build a greater, cleaner, more vibrant Joburg,” she said.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Herman Mashaba allocated R4 million to grass cutting in Roodepoort and surrounding areas, but according to the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Nonhlana Sifumba, seasonal challenges are still a problem.

She added that the summer rainfall had a significant impact on the entity’s ability to deliver services at an optimum level. According to her, the warm, wet weather accelerates the growth rate of grass, shrubbery and trees, interferes with work schedules as the workers are not permitted to operate machinery in the rain, hinders contractors who cannot commission work during the intermittent rain, results in operator downtime as the overgrown grass places extra pressure on machinery, and increases the maintenance time for open spaces and the number of pruning requests from residents. “We’re methodically working towards resolving the peak summer maintenance backlogs,” she said.
