National Mario Day

Play some video games on #NationalMarioDay

10 March is National Mario Day. This day is celebrated annually and honours Mario – the character from the popular Nintendo game.

Today is a video gamer holiday started by video gamers. The date – 10 March – was chosen because of the way it appears when abbreviated in the USA – it looks just like the name ‘Mario’. The names of the original creators of the day not be found.

Some interesting Mario facts:

– The Italian plumber, Mario, first appeared in the game Donkey Kong in 1981.

– Mario acquired his own game in 1983, when he appeared with his brother, Luigi.

– Mario is the most famous video game character ever created.

– More than 210 million copies of the Mario game series have been sold worldwide.

Some other famous Marios you might recognise include Mario Andretti (race car driver), Mario Batali (chef) and Mario Lopez (actor).

To celebrate today, have some fun with your friends and play video games. You can also do something special for, and/or with, all people named Mario!
