Video: Yet another car theft attempt at Witpoortjie Spar

Public not vigilant.

Yet another attempted vehicle theft has taken place at the Witpoortjie Spar, in a spate of thefts in the past month.

CCTV footage shows a Chevy Spark pulling into the parking space next to an empty Nissan Maxima. A man gets out of the passenger side and casually walks into the Spar. He spends a substantial time inside the Spar and exits with groceries. He gets back into the Spark on the passenger side but moments later he gets out again and within seconds he unlocks the Maxima’s door. He brazenly gets in, but fails to start the vehicle and after a few minutes climbs back into the Spark. The criminals then drive off.

The Record inspected the stolen vehicle and was shown the badly damaged ignition.

Earlier the same day, the Record received a phone call from a woman saying a baby had been left in a vehicle in the same parking lot, and asking us to check. Two Caxton employees went to investigate. They went to almost every vehicle in the lot obviously looking through vehicles’ windows. Not one person stopped to ask them what they were doing, not even the car guards.
