Sinkhole repairs cause more trouble

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Sinkhole repairs cause more problems for motorists in Weltevreden Park

Barely two weeks since Johannesburg Roads Agency employees were dispatched to repair a sinkhole on Rinyani Avenue, Weltevreden Park, it seems motorists are unhappy with the end result.

Motorists complained that the agency’s employees left a huge mess following the fixing of the sinkhole. A huge pothole still remains two weeks after the repairs. Roodepoort Northsider observed vehicles having to drive on the opposite side of the road to avoid the pothole.

The sinkhole was discovered by a private maintenance expert, Steven Kruger of SKM Maintenance on 13 February, who then reported the problem to the roads agency.

Kruger described the sinkhole as a catastrophe waiting to happen, fearing that heavy vehicles could cause a major collapse.

“The hole is humongous and it’s dangerous for trucks and cars using the road,” said Kruger. He added that the sinkhole could collapse anytime and cause havoc if not attended to immediately. “The hole seems to be small but it’s deeper when you look right in it,” Kruger said, after assessing and measuring the sinkhole.

A few days after the sinkhole was reported, the roads agency dispatched a team to conduct repairs. Spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers said upon inspection, the maintenance team discovered a second sinkhole on Kastaiing Street. She confirmed that both sinkholes were currently being repaired.
