Old crime trend resurfaces on West Rand

Often 'employment seekers' scout for robbers.

Apcan Security has warned of an old trend that has resurfaced on the West Rand and asked that residents be aware.

“It would appear that females are becoming active in house-breakings and theft cases, as well as armed robberies at residential properties,” said security practitioner Louis Grobler.

“The modus operandi of using taxis to be ferried in and out of suburbs with the loot appears to be similar to that of their male counterparts. They get dropped off and move in small groups of between two and four. They knock on doors and introduce themselves as “job seekers” looking for domestic employment. They are very persistent in their efforts to gain entry into the properties after which they rob the residents or mark the homes for burglaries and house-breakings to take place at a later stage,” said Grobler.

“Residents should not not employ staff off the streets. Request recommendations from friends and associates or use employment agencies. Also make sure that the potential employee has been cleared by the police, has a confirmed and known residential address and at least one (preferably more) relative that can be contacted .

“They should be able to give you testimonials and letters of recommendation that can be confirmed,” concluded Grobler.
