Video: Young man shot in back during armed robbery in Roodekrans

One arrested.

A man believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s was shot in the lower back last night (1 March) during a home invasion in Pafuri Road, Roodekrans.

One of the sons of the homeowner was busy in the garden at about 7.20pm when two armed intruders scaled the perimeter wall and overpowered him. They forced him into the house. The wild barking of the family’s dog alerted his father and brother who came out of their rooms to see what was causing the dog to bark. They were also confronted by the two suspects. A fight broke out between the three men and the two suspects. One of the suspects fled and when he got outside he fired a round. This in turn alerted the neighbour who called in the incident on Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch’s (RNW) radio. A RNW reaction unit rushed to the scene.

Meanwhile the physical altercation between the father, his two sons and the second suspect continued. The armed robber started shooting wildly and one of the sons was hit. The men relented and the suspect fled, but when he reached the door he ran into a reaction unit officer. A fight then broke out between them but with the help of other members of the unit the attacker was subdued.

Within minutes members of the Roodepoort Police, Apcan Security and DMS Security were on the scene. One firearm of which the numbers had been filed off was confiscated. ER24 took the injured man to Milpark Hospital. He is in a stable condition. The suspect who was injured during the fight was also transported to hospital under police guard.
