Claw vet nurse to take on Kilimanjaro for animals

Appealing for sponsorship.

On 6 September, the senior veterinary nurse from the Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) organisation, Jennifer Gerner, will start her ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Brave Jennifer, who hails from Canada, will take on the highest mountain in Africa, all for the love of animals. She hopes to raise R100 000, which will cover the cost of six months of dog and cat vaccinations. Currently Claw vaccinates about 4 500 animals a month. Businesses can have their logo put on the Claw flag that will be planted for a donation of R1 000. Private citizens can, in turn, sponsor a step for only R10. Jennifer will take approximately 38 000 steps.

“Animals have always been my passion, and my life, and working at Claw gives me the sense that I am making a difference in some small way. Even if it is just to give them a warm blanket, or a good meal, it might be something small, but hopefully it makes a difference to that one dog or cat. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a dog or cat that I helped returned to its owner happy and healthy, or seeing an animal that was unwanted by one family find another. I believe in Claw and the work we do, it is my passion in life. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is going to be one of the hardest things I have done, both physically and mentally, but with the community’s support, I am determined to do it! I will carry the weight of all the animals we are going to help with me up to the summit of Kilimanjaro,” said Jennifer.

Jennifer has not done any mountain-climbing before, and is currently training with an expert. Her climb will take until 13 September. On her climb she will be accompanied by her Canadian friend, Darlene Leonard.

Anyone who is interested in sponsoring Jennifer can contact her on 072 642 0850.
