Man's legs were broken in several places. He also fractured his hips and ankle.

When 29-year-old Reinhard Myburgh went out to get takeaways for his family on Sunday evening (26 February), the last thing he expected was to end up in a horrific accident that would land him in Helen Joseph Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

At about 5.15pm Myburgh left for McDonald’s on the corner of CR Swart and Ontdekkers Roads. On arriving he realised he had to withdraw money first and went to Princess Crossing to do so. On his way back to the fast-food outlet disaster struck. He collided with another vehicle at the intersection of said roads. Myburgh was rushed to Helen Joseph Hospital. At first doctors thought he was paralysed from his hips down but they then found that his legs were broken in several places. He also fractured his hips and ankle. The following day he spent eight hours in surgery. Steel pins were inserted into his legs. Myburgh still suffers internal bleeding and needs more surgery, but doctors can not operate at this stage since he lost too much blood during the initial surgery.

Myburgh’s wife, a Caxton employee, said she is just relieved that her husband was not paralysed. The couple are parents to four children. Myburgh is a panel beater by trade and well known in the community.

Myburgh is still in ICU.
