A laugh at Tumi or Not Tumi

Tumi Morake entertains fans at Silverstar

It was a sold-out affair at Silverstar when the Queen of Comedy, Tumi Morake touched down in the West Rand. This was the comedian’s second leg of her national and African tour, titled Tumi or Not Tumi.

The audience was warmed up by comedian Khanyisa Bunu who had the crowd rolling with laughter. They enjoyed the performance by the former school educator so much that they were reluctant to see her leave the stage.

But the main act herself made sure to remind the audience who the show was about. As she was called on stage a confident Tumi, clad in a short jumpsuit, had the crowd in awe. The comedian had lost a significant amount of weight even though she recently had her third child. Before getting into her set she showed off her body by twerking for the audience to show them she still has the moves – and even more.

“I had to lose the weight gradually. You know with black people, they start calling funeral homes if you lose weight drastically and think it’s the HI virus,” she joked to tremendous laughter and applause.

During her time on stage, Tumi touched on a variety of topics in a manner that had the audience in stitches – and left them thinking. The topics included side-chicks (affairs), losing weight, being a working mother and wife, and the need that racism in South Africa be confronted.

However, one of the topics that had the comedian’s blood boiling is one closest to her heart, xenophobia. She is married to a Ghanaian and they have three children. She reiterated that violence against African nationals must stop as, since she is married to one, she and her children are also foreign nationals. However, the serious tone did not last long and for the rest of the evening Tumi had her audience in stitches.
