Housing concerns are being addressed

Residents of the Princess informal settlement have vowed to protest until their housing demands are met.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has said that residents of Roodepoort must not feel neglected as measures are being put in place to address their housing concerns.

The spokesperson for the Provincial Department of Human Settlements, Mogomotsi Mogidiri, was speaking in reference to protests by infuriated residents of the Princess informal settlement over the unallocated but completed housing development units along Albertina Sisulu Road in Roodepoort.

Mogodiri said the local and provincial government plan to build mega-cities that include RDP houses and flats. He added that both provincial government and municipalities are working around the clock to ensure that RDP houses and flats are allocated effectively.

During his recent State of the Province Address (SOPA) in Randfontein, Gauteng Premier David Makhura highlighted plans to address issues of land availability in order to facilitate the construction of infrastructure and settlements.

Makhura said houses were being built in various areas of the West Rand, and that the Syferfontein mega-project, which will be launched by MEC Paul Mashatile in June, will provide up to 40 000 units for Gauteng residents. In addition, Makhura said five private sector-led mega human settlements projects will start in April.

Mogodiri says the municipality has met with the residents of the informal settlement and will continue to engage with them to address their concerns. The disgruntled residents say they will continue to protest until their needs are met.
