Be loud with colour at the Cansa Shavathon

Donate for a good cause

Cansa is hosting its annual Cansa Shavathon campaign. This year will celebrate the 14th Shavathon with events at malls across the country on 25 February (26 Feb at selected venues) and at workplaces from 27 February to 3 March.

This past weekend, Cansa West Rand held a training session for their volunteers at the Westview Clinic. The purpose of the training was to get the volunteers ready to assist all potential donors on the day of the event without a hitch.

Community Mobiliser and Fundraiser West Rand, Linda Steyn, was on hand to explain how the donated money or hair would benefit the organisation.

“We are able to provide professional nurses and counselling to those who need it. We acquire medical equipment, educate learners at schools and on wellness days; also for medical research – not to find a cure but to improve lifestyle. According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 100 different types of cancers,” she said.

Cansa also provides Tough Living With Cancer homes. The mother or father is placed in a home with the child so the parent could be there when the child is going through chemotherapy. Adults are also provided with homes from where they are taken for their hospital visits without inconveniencing the family unit.

For a R50 donation – R25 for children under 12 – people can have their hair shaved or sprayed. Hair can also be donated if the ponytail measures 25cm or longer. All hair donations that meet the requirements will be used to make wigs for cancer patients, which are provided at no cost.
