Harcourts robbery: Police explain release of suspect

One suspect at Krugersdorp Correctional Facility.

According to Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo, one of the suspects who was arrested after last year’s armed robbery at Harcourts Rhino estate agency, was released due to a lack of evidence.

According to the suspect, he found the cellphone that was stolen during the robbery in December 2016 in a dustbin at Princess Crossing. He said when the police called him pretending to be the owner he was more than willing to meet with them to return the phone. Due to the fact that the State could not prove the opposite, the magistrate released him.

Khumalo said the second suspect who was arrested on the scene after he had fallen out of the getaway vehicle is currently at the Krugersdorp Correctional Facility. He was denied bail after he had given a false address in his bail application.
