Valentine’s Day

Spoil that special someone on #ValentinesDay

14 February is Valentine’s Day, the perfect opportunity to declare your love – anonymously if you wish – to the biggest love of your life.

Valentine’s Day began as St Valentine’s Day, and was a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. It was only during the High Middle Ages that 14 February (Valentine’s Day) became associated with romantic love, because the tradition of courtly love flourished in that era.

During 18th century England, the day evolved into an occasion when lovers expressed their love and affection for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery (chocolates, sweets and other snacks) and sending Valentine cards.

Traditionally, the credit for declaring 14 February to be St Valentine’s Day, in approximately the year 496, is given to Pope Gelasius. This was done in an attempt to separate the celebration of the Roman church from Lupercalia – which was an ancient pagan fertility festival that occurred on 15 February.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, run out to the store and get your special someone a small gift to show your love.
