“With limited space, I've had to turn children away, but that is not what I want to do."
The Queen Butterfly Foundation is a home that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children with severe mental and physical disabilities. However, the foundation is now looking to break out from its current facilities and expand to assist more children in need.
For over a year, its Principal and founder, Palesa Mofokeng, has been taking care of the children at Kloofendal’s NG Kerk, where she was given a room. Now the room has become too small for the children to stimulate their growth further.
“With limited space, I’ve had to turn children away, but that is not what I want to do. This year I have been running around seeking help for a bigger space so we can take care of more children. My long-term plan has always been to have a building from the ground up but just when that looked like it would happen, the plans fell through, due to unforeseen circumstances,” she said.
With her plan to move out having fallen through, the Foundation has had to cease taking in children and temporarily house its current learners in different schools.
“The space we received from the NG Kerk was only available for a short period of time, and we could not stay there. Now we are appealing to anyone who is willing to lend a helping hand.”
Palesa has tried getting assistance to get a permanent building from the Department of Social Development for the last two years, to no avail. She has even travelled to their Pretoria offices, only to hear empty promises.
“Sometimes I want to give up, but then I remember that it’s not about me any more, its about the children. It’s about providing a safe place for them where they feel as if they belong. That has been my mission from day one. I want to accommodate the children whose families cannot afford the services offered by other places like my Foundation,” she said.
