Home runs at Cecil Payne this weekend

Raising funds for three talented boys

Three boys from the Cobra’s Baseball team at the Dragon Wings Sports Club will represent Gauteng at the National Baseball Championships (NBC).

Simangaliso Nubunga, Ameer Sedaat and Mikaeel Jack qualified for the U/15C team when they participated in the January trials.

The competition for team spots took place in Edenvale and Boksburg, where the boys had to prove their mettle against players from various provincial teams. The boys will now be training hard to be ready for the NBC, which takes place from 8 to 11 April at Marks Park. However, making it into the team is just the start as the boys will now have to raise funds to purchase their own playing kits and pay entry fees. Their club will be assisting them this weekend by hosting a fundraiser to sponsor the three boys. They will do so by hosting league games with teams from Benoni, Palm Ridge, Edenvale and Randburg participating to ensure a fun-filled and action-packed day.

“We will be selling food and drinks in aid of the boys, so we are pleading with the community to come to Cecil Payne Stadium in Maraisburg. There will also be a donation drive for Sparrow Village, which is struggling with funds. Food, old toys and clothes are welcome because the items are mainly for the children in the orphanage,” said Dragon Wings spokesperson, Rieggs Wings.

The fundraiser will be on 19 February and fans will be treated to U/9 to U/15 baseball league games from 9am. For more information, contact 081 533 0836.
