Follow up: Help arrived for Mitchell

Mitchell grateful for the help received from far and wide

Since the publication of Mitchell Vorster’s story, help has been streaming in from far and wide – even from the Philippines.

Mitchell was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community who offered to help him make a new start. “Dinah Smith – who lives in Kempton Park – offered me a room as well as space in her garage to store my bakkie and belongings until I can get back on my feet. Jonathan received permission from a missionary in the Philippines to help me move my belongings to Dinah,” a clearly emotional Mitchell said on Friday, 3 February.

He was very optimistic that his move would be completed by Saturday, 4 February and he was looking forward to sleeping in a comfortable bed. “The first thing I need to do when I arrive at Dinah’s, is get my bakkie fixed and sort out my driver’s licence – which was stolen along with my phone. Then I will sort through my belongings to see what I want to keep and what I will sell. I do not want to live off Dinah’s kindness forever. I need to find a job and a place of my own. I want to go to East London to find work so I can be nearer to my two girls,” he said.

According to Dinah, on 6 February Mitchell sent her an SMS to inform her he’d encountered some issues with the transport. “About half of his belongings are in my garage already, but I know the man who helped Mitchell with transport had a wedding on Saturday and said he would resume on Monday. Mitchell said he could not move here yet, as his bakkie still needs to be towed, and he does not want to leave it here, because he will need it to find work,” she said.

Mitchell wanted to thank everyone involved with helping him from the bottom of his heart. “I sit here with tears in my eyes, the Lord is good. The people who stepped up to help me – Dinah, the missionary in the Philippines, Jonathan, the block watch and everyone who put in a good word for me – are so awesome! Without them I would not have been able to make it this far. From the deepest part of my heart I want to thank them for helping me to get a step closer to my girls,” he concluded.
