Parkies on top at awards

District awards excellence

Florida Park High School (Parkies) made its presence felt at the Gauteng Department of Education’s Johannesburg West Grade 12 Awards event on 27 January.

In the category Excellence in Schools, Parkies was named the best town school in Johannesburg West. The award was one of many for the school at the awards function.

The biggest award of the night went to Parkies’ Amy Steenkamp who was named the Dux Learner for her performance in the national senior certificate exams. She excelled in subjects such as Afrikaans, Life Sciences and Economics, making her the best learner in the District.

Amy was not the only Parkies learner awarded at the event. Her schoolmates Halley Madison was given an award for excellence in History while Keitumetse Motsoagae received an award for excellence in Setswana.

Parkies principal Stella du Preez was elated at the success of her school and attributed it to hard work and excellent staff.

“We were so excited but this is thanks to good management, disciplined and hardworking learners and educators. We also provide a constructive and conducive environment to produce positive results. We are among the top 10 schools in the district, which includes private schools, and our matriculants had a pass rate of 97,7 per cent,” she said.

Educators and learners from schools such as West Ridge High School, Hoërskool Die Adelaar, Victory House, Hoërskool Die Burger, Allen Glen High School, Lantern School and Hoërskool Florida were honoured for their hard work.
