Desperation seeps in

He said he decided to sell most of his belongings to get enough money to make the move.

A good Samaritan has come forward to help Mitchell Vorster get back on his feet again, but there is only one problem. He needs to sell his belongings to get enough money to enable him to go.

Vorster has been living in his bakkie since he was evicted from his house on 24 January. “I dare not leave my belongings for only a few seconds,” he said with desperation in his voice.

“I spoke to a woman named Dinah Smith from Kempton Park, who offered me a place to stay, but I have to get there. My bakkie is not big enough to take everything with me and my bakkie needs repairs.”

He said he decided to sell most of his belongings to get enough money to make the move. “I have to get off the street.”

While speaking to Vorster, three young men walked up and blatantly started looking through his possessions. “Go away, there is nothing here for you,” Vorster shouted at them and they casually sauntered away. “This is the problem. They come here during the day to see what I have and at night they return and rob me blind.

“Sometimes as many as 10 men come at once. I cannot defend myself and protect my belongings at the same time. Just last night they took my lawnmower, weed eater, cutlery and computer equipment.”

He said he now wants to sell everything. “I have some good-quality equipment here. The whole lot can go for R40 000. It’s negotiable.”

Vorster said he has camping equipment, outback braais, a Bushbaby, canoe, compressor, furniture and a set of rods and reels worth about R30 000. “I will use the money to fix my bakkie and take Dinah up on her offer to stay there until I am on my feet again.”
